Why it matters for commerce

Rates set the cost of every store card, car loan and home loan. Higher rates leave indebted households with less to spend and hit credit retailers, car dealers, furniture stores and mall landlords hardest.

QuestionsGood to know.

  • The repo rate is what the Reserve Bank charges banks. Prime is the rate banks charge their best customers, and it moves with the repo rate. Most home loans, car loans and store accounts are priced relative to prime.

  • The Monetary Policy Committee meets six times a year. The next decision date is shown on this page and in our calendar.
