QuestionsGood to know.

  • Twice a year: interim results for the first half of their financial year and final results for the full year. Results bunch up around year ends: companies with June year ends report finals in August and September and interims in February and March; those with March year ends report in May and June and again in November. Each company publishes on SENS, the JSE’s news service, usually before the market opens.

  • JSE rules require a company to publish a trading statement once it is reasonably sure that its earnings per share for a period will differ by at least 20% from the year before. It often comes a few weeks before the results and moves the share first.

  • Yahoo Finance estimates the date from the company’s past reporting pattern until the company confirms it. Treat an expected date as roughly right, and check SENS or the company’s investor page for the confirmed one.

  • The share’s closing price on the results day against its close the trading day before. The Top 40’s move on the same day shows how much was the market and how much was the news.
